Shin muscles are found at the front of your lower legs and they are really useful when walking and running. These muscles can be easily exercised using resistance bands or on your own. So, putting some effort into working on your shins can make running, walking, and other exercises more pleasant. So, below are some of the steps you can follow to work-out your shin muscles in-order to avoid injuries or pain.
Step-1: How To Do Shin Stepping Exercises:
> Perform wall shin raises: These involve stretching your shins while resting your back against the wall. So, stand with your shoulders back and butt up against the wall and then position your feet away from the wall with your heels about 1 foot-length in front of you. Keep the heels on the ground and then raise your toes upwards. Stretch as far as you can and then slowly lower the toes back towards the ground but don’t let them touch the floor. Do, this exercise for 10–15 reps and after let your feet back onto floor for a quick rest.
> Make single leg raises: This workout is similar to the wall shin raise but requires using only one foot at a time. This is a great exercise to build to after regular wall shin raises. To do this exercise, stand with your back against the wall and then rest one foot lightly against the wall. Dorsiflex with the foot on the ground for 10–15 reps then switch your feet and repeat on the other leg. However, you will need to rest between switches since you only use one leg at a time.
> Do some heel step-downs: To do this exercise, stand up straight without leaning against anything with your feet about a shoulder-width apart. Take a step forward while making sure only the heel plants then hold your toes in the air making sure the ball of your foot doesn’t get any closer than an inch to the floor. Step back to the starting position and repeat the process with the same foot for 10–15 reps and then switch to the other leg.
> Tryout a seated shin stretch: Get onto the floor while resting on your knees and then stretch out the feet so that your toes are pointed behind you with the tops of your feet on the floor. After, gently lean backwards while pushing down on your heels to stretch out the front of your leg. Hold the stretch for 30 seconds and then repeat for 3-times. In case you wish to increase on the stretch, then do one leg at a time to increase the weight and you may also try lifting up your knees to increase on the resistance.
> Perform some heel drops: These workouts will help to provide some resistance to your foot. So, stand with your toes on the edge of a step while making sure that you have something nearby to balance yourself. Afterwards, shift the weight on to one leg then lift the other foot off the step. Lower the heel downwards while making sure your toes point upward. Return to the starting position and then switch legs. Repeat the process for 5-minutes.
STEP-2: Exercising Your Shin Using Accessories:
> Tryout toe curls: Begin by standing at the edge of a towel with your feet hip-width apart. Use the toes on one foot to gather the edge of the towel and then pull it towards you. Afterwards, push the towel back into position and repeat the process on the other foot.
> Perform calf stretches: This workout uses exercise bands to help pull your toes towards you. The action it makes strengthens your shin muscles. So, sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you then loop the exercise band around the bottom of your feet just near the arch. After, gently pull the band back into dorsiflexion (raising your toes upward toward your shins as far as possible) and then hold that position for 10–15 seconds. Repeat the process for 2-3 times on the same foot and then switch to the other leg. However, the exercise-band to use for this and other shin exercises should have a strip design that can wrap around your foot and ankles.
> Do a shin resistance workout: This exercise uses a band and fixed object to help extend your lower leg. So, your foot will use the band as resistance to pull against when flexing. To do this work-out, begin by sitting on the floor with your legs stretched out in front while making sure your toes are pointed up towards the ceiling. After, loop the exercise band around the top of your foot and a stationary object like a table leg, or anything else that can stay securely in place. Dorsiflex your foot against the resistance while pulling your toes back against the band. Repeat the process for 10–15 reps and then switch legs.
> Try doing a monster walk: With this exercise, you can use a resistance band to stretch by taking steps. In fact, this will help to stretch your shins and hip abductor muscles. To do this exercise, begin by standing up while placing your feet a shoulder-width apart, then wrap the resistance band around your ankles or thighs. After, step forward and to the right with your right leg, then bring your left leg forward so that it is even with the right-leg. Take a step backward towards the original position and then bring your other leg back to even. Take several steps forward before going backward. Additionally, remember to alternate your lead foot for each forward step.
